Mar 7:8-13
“Abandoning the command of God, you hold on to human tradition.”

He also said to them,
“You have a fine way of invalidating God’s command in order to set up your tradition!

“For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother;
and Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.

“But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is corban’ ” (that is, an offering devoted to God),

“you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.

“You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down.
And you do many other similar things.”

Jesus tells them that they have a “fine way of invalidating God’s command”…a tongue-in-cheek statement of truth.

Jesus then states the reason.
They do so to setup their own tradition.

Jesus gives the example.
Moses/Law stated that they were to honor their father and mother.
Yet, they did not.

How?
They did not take care of their parents.

Rather than meeting the needs of their parents, these religious frauds would call “corban”.
The idea is that whatever resources they had that could meet the need of the parents were being described as “an offering devoted to God”.

They were seeking to get the resources under their control.

The same occurs today.

To hear it in most churches, one would nearly think that “giving” only “counts” if you give through their particular church.

Such is not true.

We do as they did when we act this way.
We nullify the Word of God.

Let us not nullify the Lord by our traditions.
Let us seek Him.
Let us obey Him.
Let us abide in Him.
Then, watch what He does.
