“He Breathed His Last…”

“He Breathed His Last…”

Blessings folk!

It is good that we come to this portion of the gospel of Mark at this time of year.

Christmas Day is quickly arriving.
The day we ‘celebrate’ the birth of the Lord (though He was born on Sept. 11, 3 B.C….another discussion for another time).

We do well to be ever reminded of why He came.

To reconcile man to Father.
To do so by offering Himself as a blood sacrifice.

No one “killed” Jesus.
He gave Himself.

Mar 15:33-37

When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.

At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice,
“ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” which is translated,
“MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”

When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Behold, He is calling for Elijah.”

Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.”

And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last.

Jesus is hanging on the cross.

At noon darkness fell upon the land until 3 pm.

At the ninth hour Jesus cried out.
It was a cry arising from bearing the weight of the sin of mankind.
The Lord knew in the wondrous mystery of the Godhead the purpose and plan.
Yet, the Lord as fully man, experienced pain beyond anything man had before.
Pain of sin.

There appeared to be a moment of compassion…an offering of sponge of sour wine…until we see what was spoken.
A snarky “let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.”

The other gospels give additional detail.
(It is good/necessary to read all accounts to receive the complete picture.)

Mark simply states that He uttered a loud cry and breathed His last.

He died.

He gave Himself up.

John 19:30
Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”
And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

For you.
For me.
