“Be Filled…”

“Be Filled…”

Blessings folk!

Do not be foolish.
Know and understand the will of God.

Now, the next several verses are all one sentence.
Look at them as a whole…and we will discuss slowly…
As

Eph 5:18-21

And do not get drunk with wine,
for that is dissipation,
but be filled with the Spirit,

speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;

always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;

and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Verse 18 gives us two instructions…

  1. Do not be drunk with wine…why?…because it is dissipation.

What is dissipation?
The Greek means “debauchery”, “wastefulness”, “excess”, “extravagant squandering”.
We are not to do so with drink nor food (gluttony).

Rather, we are to…

(2) Be filled with the Spirit.
The Greek means “complete”, “be filled”…in this context it means “impart richly”, “imbue with”.

We are to be filled with the Spirit.
We are not to be filled to excess with food nor drink.

Be not be drunk with drink/food.
Be filled to overflowing with the Spirit of the Most High God!
