“What Are These Hebrews Doing Here?”

“What Are These Hebrews Doing Here?”

Blessings folk!

Saul had receive the word.

It was not the word that he wanted.

Saul had Samuel conjured so as to tell him what to do.

Rather, Samuel told him what was to occur…and why.

Saul collapsed.
He then ate.
He then left.

Meanwhile…the account continues with David and the Philistines…

1Sa 29:1-5

Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek,
while the Israelites were camping by the spring which is in Jezreel.

And the lords of the Philistines were proceeding on by hundreds and by thousands,
and David and his men were proceeding on in the rear with Achish.

Then the commanders of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”
And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or rather these years, and I have found no fault in him from the day he deserted to me to this day?”

But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him, and the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Make the man go back, that he may return to his place where you have assigned him, and do not let him go down to battle with us, or in the battle he may become an adversary to us. For with what could this man make himself acceptable to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of these men?

“Is this not David, of whom they sing in the dances, saying,
‘Saul has slain his thousands,
And David his ten thousands’?”

The Philistines were preparing for battle with Israel.
Hundreds.
Thousands.

The commanders of the Philistines were concerned (rightly?) with the Hebrews being among them.

They thought David might turn on them.
Achish sought to defend David.

  • David had been with him these days…years…
  • I have found no fault in him
  • He considered David to have deserted to him.

The commanders were angry with Achish.
They demanded that he send David to the rear.
They demanded that he not go to battle with them.
They thought David might seize the moment to ingratiate himself to Saul.

The commanders then declared “Is this not David…?” The one whom they sing in the dances.
“Saul has slain thousands…
David his ten thousands…”

They knew.
They were rightly fearful.

Was Achish wrong?
Were the commanders wrong?
We will see.
