“A Better Hope”

Blessings folk!

Much truth comes from an understanding of what the Word relates about Melchizedek, no?

Let us continue…slowly…to look at these truths.

Heb 7:17-19

For it is attested
of Him,
“YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER
ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”

For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness

(for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

Notice the words “of Him” are provided in English to help understand the phrase. (We know this because it is in italics.)

Of Whom is the attestation?
The Lord Jesus

Jesus is a Priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.
Without genealogy.
Outside of the Aaronic line as per the Law.

Then, the Lord give some serious insight into the Law and “the better hope”.

On the one hand: The Law.
“There is a setting aside of a former commandment…”
Jesus did not abolish the Law.
Rather, He fulfilled the Law.

Mat 5:17

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets;
I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.

The Law was weak and useless in relationship to forgiveness.
The Law made nothing perfect.
The Law provided for a covering of unintentional sin, yet the Law did not provide for forgiveness of intentional sin. An interesting fact that brings a corollary thought.

If the Law did not provide forgiveness…
If the Lord declares that those who sinned should suffer the consequences…
Then why did the Lord allow Israel to continue to exist?

Simply His grace.
A vivid Old Covenant picture of the grace of God.

But now, we have a better hope through which we can draw near to God.
The Lord Jesus Christ.
Our Hope.
Our Mediator.

Draw near to Him.
Abide in Him.
Stay there…
