“Head In Hand”

Blessings folk!

David was victorious over Goliath.
Because of this, Israel arose and was victorious over the Philistines.

David kept a couple of things…
  • Goliath’s weapons
  • Goliath’s head

Gruesome and gory, yet apparently with purpose.

1Sa 17:54-58
Then David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem,
but he put his weapons in his tent.

Now when Saul saw David going out against the Philistine,
he said to Abner the commander of the army,
“Abner, whose son is this young man?”
And Abner said, “By your life, O king, I do not know.”

The king said, “You inquire whose son the youth is.”

So when David returned from killing the Philistine,
Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head in his hand.

Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?”
And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

Saul nor Abner knew who David was.
They knew not his family.

They soon would.

After the victory, Abner brought David before King Saul…with the Philistine’s head in his hand!

Some way to approach the king!

Evidence of victory.
Also, subtle evidence that Saul had not been the one to lead in victory.
Saul had cowered in the fear of man.
David had rushed to the enemy in the power of the name of the Lord.

But wait!

Yes, Saul was “king”.
Yet, David had already been anointed king.

David knew who the Lord was/is.
David knew who he was in the Lord.
David knew his time was coming.
Watch this thread-of-a-thought throughout the balance of the account of David’s life.

He awaited the timing of God.
He sought to live in the power of the Lord…
Though not perfectly…
