“Why ’Lord’…?”

“Why ’Lord’…?”

Blessings folk!

David had rebuked Abner…publicly by crying out across the valley.

Saul recognized David’s voice.
Hear the word of David…

1Sa 26:17-20

Then Saul recognized David’s voice and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?”
And David said, “It is my voice, my lord the king.”

He also said,
“Why then is my lord pursuing his servant?
For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand?

“Now therefore, please let my lord the king listen to the words of his servant. If the LORD has stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering; but if it is men, cursed are they before the LORD, for they have driven me out today so that I would have no attachment with the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’

“Now then, do not let my blood fall to the ground away from the presence of the LORD;
for the king of Israel has come out to search for a single flea,
just as one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”

David…

  • Declared Saul as “lord”
  • Declared himself Saul’s servant
  • Asked what he had done
  • Asked what evil was in his hand
  • Offered a solution…
    • If the Lord has stirred up Saul…if it was judgment of God…then David would offer sacrifice
    • If men were the source…may they be cursed before the Lord
    • (Note that David did not lay blame in either case solely at the foot of Saul…interesting)
  • Did not want to be separated from “the inheritance/the presence of the Lord”
  • Declared himself to be but a flea…a mere partridge in the mountains

David knew that he was the anointed king…in waiting.
David awaited the timing of the Lord.
In the meanwhile, David wanted all to be well…even though the king…his father-in-law wanted him dead.

David remained faithful to the Lord in the midst of the most troubling and trying of times.

May we do likewise.
