“Led…To Be Tempted…”

Blessings folk!

Mark tells us that the Spirit impelled Jesus into the wilderness.
There Jesus was…
  • with wild beasts
  • tempted by Satan
  • ministered to by angels

Interesting.

Let us see what Matthew says…

Mat 4:1-2

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.

Very interesting!

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness for a purpose.
The purpose?
To be temped by the devil.

“But”, one will say, “God tempts no man to evil”.

True.

Jas 1:13
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”;
for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

Satan was the one who tempted.

Why did the Spirit lead Jesus to such an encounter?

Jesus was to be tempted “in all ways” even as man is.

Heb 2:17-18
Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered,
He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.

This does not mean that Jesus was tempted with every possible sin.
It does mean that He experienced temptation that is foundational to all sin.

Did Jesus know that this was the purpose of the Spirit’s leading?
We are not told.

Perhaps.
We see that He was communing with Father.
He fasted.
Forty days.
Forty nights.
He then became hungry.
As we will see, it was at this point that the tempting came.

Be not surprised when temptation comes.
The enemy will send His fiery darts.
Jesus experienced such.
So shall we.

Jesus also shows us how to handle such temptation…to be continued…
