“Peter Went…”

“Peter Went…”

Blessings folk!

Simon Peter, James and John left everything and followed Jesus.

For the longest time I thought this was the ultimate “cold-call”.

I thought they had an encounter with Jesus “out of no where”…and followed.

I think that is likely incorrect.

They had heard of Jesus.

But, we do not have to go by conjecture.

Go back a chapter in Luke…Luke 4.

In Luke 4 Jesus…
  • is tempted by the devil
  • teaches in the synagogues
  • read Scripture in His hometown, declares fulfillment of the Scripture that day, then is promptly hauled off to be killed…only to walk through their midst in departure
  • rebuked demons from a man…sets him free

The people were amazed by His teaching and His authority.
The report about Him was spreading throughout the region.

Then, this…

Luk 4:38-39

Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home.
Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her.

And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her;
and she immediately got up and waited on them.

Jesus healed Simon’s mother-in-law from a high fever.
He rebuked the fever.
It left.
She was immediately healed and strengthened.
She arose and waited upon them.

This occurred before Luke 5…when Peter left with Him.

Some would say that perhaps the chapters are not chronological.
We do see that in Scripture, but not here.
How do I know?

Luk 1:1-4

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account
of the things accomplished among us,

just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning
were eyewitnesses and servants of the word,

Luk 1:3
it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning,
to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus;

Luk 1:4
so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.

Luke made a point of the fact that his writing, Luke/Acts, was in consecutive order.
Chronological.

Peter had encounters with the Lord.
When the Lord called, he went.

So should we.
