“Teaching With Authority”

Blessings folk!

Peter, James and John left everything and followed Jesus.

Mark then tells us this…

Mar 1:21-22

They went into Capernaum;
and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach.

They were amazed at His teaching;
for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

They went to Capernaum
On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and Jesus began to teach.

The reaction of the folk?
Amazed!
Amazed at the teaching of Jesus.

Why?
He was teaching as One having authority.
He was not teaching as the scribes.

Most teaching/preaching in the church today is “as of the scribes”.
There it no/little power and authority.

Why?

We rest on the patterns and practice of man rather than on the power of the Holy Spirit.
We are “twice-too-cute”.
We think we have to do something to make the Word/God “attractive”, “relevant”, etc.
We are more “sensitive” to sin than we are to the Spirit.
We, for the most part, simply refuse to teach the Word Itself and proclaim the Gospel.
By doing so we reject the power of God.
Paul had learned his lesson…

1Co 1:17-18
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel,
not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void.

For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Matthew and Luke confirm in several places that the people were amazed at Jesus teaching.

He taught with power.
He taught with authority.
He taught the Word of God.
He has all authority.
He has granted true believers the same authority and has commanded us to go.

Mat 28:18-20
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying,
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

“[fn]Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all that I commanded you;
and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Do it.
