Marriage - Part 2

Blessings Saints!

Be certain to read “Marriage”, August 11, 2010.

Read the Word again…

Matthew 19
 1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

After Jesus had finished these sayings?

What sayings?

It is always important to check the context.

Jesus had answered questions from the disciples...Matthew 18.
“Who is the greatest in the kingdom heaven?”
“How often shall I forgive my brother?”

The entire chapter speaks of forgiveness.

After these sayings...forgiveness…

The religious rulers of the day, the Pharisees, came to Jesus.
They came with the motivation to tempt him.
They had an agenda.

They inquired, “is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?”

In other words, can a man rid himself of his wife for any reason?

This is the context in which Jesus responded.

Jesus affirmed the Word. He asked “have you not read?” In other words, Pharisees, do you not know the Word of God? They did know the Word. They were using the Word to setup Jesus. They did this often...here… also with the woman “caught in adultery”, etc.

Jesus told them to check the Word for the answer.
Then, He gives them the answer.

The Word quoted the Word.

He Who made them at the beginning (truth rejected by much of the church) made them male and female.

Again, the answer is in response to an inquiry related to divorce...marriage.
Male and female.

God designed marriage, male and female, from the beginning.

Jesus is quoting Genesis 1.

For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

What cause?
Marriage.

Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

The man leaves father and mother.
The man cleaves to his wife.
The twain (two) shall be one flesh...a weaving of two into one.

Leave.
Cleave.
Weave.

This is a “supernatural”, mystical union that God creates in a joining together.
Man should not seek to put it asunder.

This is foundational to our understanding of what is happening today with the debate over “marriage”.

Generally speaking, few understand what true marriage is.

To be continued…

Pray for those on this list...some trying times…
