Note the reaction of the people.

  • Many of the people with Mary believed in Jesus. They did so based upon what they saw Jesus do.

  • Others of the people with Mary hurried to the Pharisees and reported Jesus had done. Seeking to endear themselves to the religious leadership.

  • The Chief Priests and Pharisees panicked.
    • they called a council
    • what to do?
    • Jesus’ performing of signs would cause people to believe Him
    • then, the Romans would come and take away our sanctuary and nation.

Well, there you have it.
The Pharisees feared loss of power, resources, prestige, position.
Always follow the money.

They were religious, political opportunists who saw a developing problem related to their power structure.

The High Priest Caiaphas revealed the heart of the leadership.

Without realizing it, he spoke prophetically.
Caiaphas declared “You know nothing at All! You do not realize that it is more to your advantage to have one man die for the people than for the whole nation to perish”

In anger and resentment, he spoke the plans of the Most High God.

The Word clarifies.
Caiaphas did not say this on his own.
Because he was high priest that year...apparently the Lord chose to speak through him due to his position.
He prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation.
But, not only the Jewish nation.
Jesus would gather together into one the children of God who are scattered.

The council agreed to move upon Caiaphas’ suggestion.

They planned to kill Jesus.
