1 Th 5:21-22
But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;
abstain from every form of evil.

To what thought does the “but” connect?

Oh, yeah…

Do not quench the Spirit;
do not despise prophetic utterances.

We are not to quench the Spirit.
We are not to despise prophetic utterances.

But!
We are to examine everything carefully.
We are to see if something is from God or not.
We are not to believe everything just because someone says “it is of the Spirit”, “it is prophecy”.

Examine!
By what standard?
The Word of the Lord!
The Spirit of the Lord!

After examining everything, what are we to do?

Hold fast to the good!
Hang on tight to it!

Abstain from every form of evil.
Every form.
Abstain…have nothing to do with it!

Let us do this.

Do not quench the Spirit.
Do not despise prophetic utterances.
Examine everything carefully!
Hold to the good.
Abstain from the evil.
