“Land of Nod”

Blessings folk!

Cain learned that he was “cursed from the ground”.
He learned that would be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth.

His reaction?

Genesis 4:13-14

Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is too great to bear!

“Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

Cain was overwhelmed by the ramifications of his actions.
He declared that his punishment was too great to bear.
He was driven from the face of the ground.
He knew that God’s face was hidden from him.
He knew the Word of the Lord would be true - he would be a vagrant and wanderer.
He feared that he would be killed by whoever found him.

You still defiance in Cain…

  • “You have driven me…”
  • “My punishment too great…”
He still did not trust/depend upon the Lord.

The Lord’s reaction?

Gen 4:15-16

So the LORD said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.

Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

The Lord promised vengeance on whoever killed Cain.
A detterent.

The Lord also appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.
We do not know what the sign was.
Many fanciful suggestions have been proposed.
We simply do not know.

Then Cain left.
What did he leave?
He left the Presence of the Lord.
I suspect the worse part of the punishment.

Where did he go?
The Land of Nod, east of Eden.

Nod meanings “wandering”.

He lived in the land of wandering.

Let us not do so…
