“…Who Enclosed the Sea?”

“…Who Enclosed the Sea?”

Blessings folk!

The Lord continues His questioning of Job.

Look at this question!!

Note the subject: the sea.
Note what the Lord says about it.
Note “how” He says it.
Note the answer embedded within the question…

Job 38:8-11

“Or who enclosed the sea with doors
When, bursting forth, it went out from the womb;

When I made a cloud its garment
And thick darkness its swaddling band,

And I placed boundaries on it
And set a bolt and doors,

And I said, ‘Thus far you shall come, but no farther;
And here shall your proud waves stop’?

The question?
Who enclosed/etc. the sea?

The answer?
The Lord…

  • Enclosed the sea with doors
  • Placed boundaries on the sea

Note the vivid language.

The creation of the sea is pictured as coming forth from a womb.
A cloud is the sea’s garment.
Thick darkness is its swaddling band.

The Lord set the boundaries of the sea.
He set “a bolt and doors”.
He declares exactly how far the waves would go.
The “proud waves stop” where the Lord says.

How dare Job question the Lord of such?

How dare we?
