“Jonathan Stripped Himself”

Blessings folk!

Saul took David into his house.

It is asked, “had David not been there already?”

Apparently, David “came and went” as needed to play music for the king when an evil spirit come upon Saul.

Saul likely never saw David, thus the reason that he did not know him nor his family.
(The musician would have been placed out of sight)

Now, watch what happens next…

1Sa 18:3-4

Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.

Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David,
with his armor, including his sword and his bow and his belt.

Though often just read through…
Though often glanced over…
This is extremely significant.

Jonathan (who was some 30 years older than David) was transferring his kingship to David.

The accruements of the king-in-waiting were significant.
The Robe.
The Armor.
The Sword.
The Bow.
The Belt.

All were given to David by Jonathan.

Jonathan stripped himself…
Of his position.
Of his power.
Of his protection
Of the glory of man.

He literally placed his life in David’s hands.

Had Jonathan heard that David had been anointed king?
We are not told.
Probably not.

Did he know that David would be king and he would not?
Yes.

Did this “bother” Jonathan?
No.

Jonathan “made a covenant” with David.
Jonathan initiated.
Jonathan loved David as himself.

All this points to the fact that Jonathan knew what was occurring.

Apparently the Lord revealed.

I suspect that it occurred by the Lord being the one who brought their spirits together.

What does this say to us?

Are we open to such a move of the Spirit in our lives?
Do we rejoice when others are exalted by the Lord?
Do we walk in humility with one another?
Do we trust one another?
Do we love one another?

We must love one another.
The Lord has repeatedly commanded it.
Not a love of duty in the flesh.
A love of Oneness in the Spirit.

Jonathan and David had such a love for one another.
