“The Lord Said To My Lord”

“The Lord Said To My Lord”

Blessings folk!

Jesus had been questioned by the Religionists.
The Pharisees used the issue of taxes.
The Sadducees used that which they denied - the resurrection.
A scribe came with a sincere inquiry related to “what is the greatest commandment.”

Now, Jesus asked a question.
He did so in full hearing of the people, the Religionists and all gathered about the Temple.

Mar 12:35-37

And Jesus began to say, as He taught in the temple,
“How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?

“David himself said in the Holy Spirit,
‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET.”’

“David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; so in what sense is He his son?”
And the large crowd enjoyed listening to Him.

Jesus asked how the scribes could say that the Christ is the son of David.
Jesus did not affirm nor deny the scribes understanding.

With the question and subsequent comment it would have been hard to determine whether Jesus agreed/disagreed.

He simply asked how it was that they taught this.

Especially in light of the Old Testament passage that He quoted…

Psa 110:1
A Psalm of David.
The LORD says to my Lord:
“Sit at My right hand
Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”

If David called Him Lord, then how is He David’s son?

This Psalm is alluded to and repeated in several portions of Scripture…

Act 2:34-35
“For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says:
‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.”’

1Co 15:25
For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.

 Heb 1:13
But to which of the angels has He ever said,
“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES
A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET”?
TOOLS

 Heb 10:12-13
but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time,
SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD,
TOOLS

waiting from that time onward UNTIL HIS ENEMIES BE MADE A FOOTSTOOL FOR HIS FEET.

What did the Lord mean?
What did He intend by asking this question?

Selah!
