Blessings folk!
Jesus destroyed the premise of the Sadducees setup question to Him.
Jesus then explained what the real issue was.
They did not believe the Word.
They did not believe in the resurrection.
Read the response of the Lord…
Mar 12:24-27
Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken,
that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God?
“For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage,
but are like angels in heaven.
“But regarding the fact that the dead rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB’?
“He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken.”
As we saw yesterday, Jesus told them they were mistaken.
Mistaken in that they did not understand the Scriptures.
Mistaken in that they did not understand the power of God.
Jesus then explains the resurrection.
When they rise from the dead they will not marry nor be given in marriage.
They will be as the angels (who do not marry, apparently).
So, the premise of their hypothetical was invalid.
Jesus continues.
He confronted them with the Word…the Old Testament.
Had they not read the book of Moses?
Of course they had read it.
They had not understood.
Or, they understood and chose to ignore.
Jesus uses the passage about the burning bush.
God said…
“I AM the God of Abraham…Isaac..Jacob”.
Not “I was”.
God was declaring that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were still alive.
Life after death.
The Sadducees did not believe in life after death.
Do you?
