So many things to be gleaned and learned in this encounter.

It was just before Passover.
Jesus comes to Bethany.
He is staying in the household of Lazarus, Martha and Mary.

Another Mary comes and anoints Jesus with an extreme amount of perfume.
A fragrant offering.
An offering of abandon withholding nothing.

The disciples, apparently led/influenced by Judas, were indignant with what they consider a waste.
The perfume could have been exchanged for money.
The money could have been used to feed the poor.

Or so they said.

We see that Judas was unconcerned for the poor.
He wanted the money.
He was a thief.

Jesus commands that they leave her alone.
What she had done was preparation for His death.
She literally anointed His Body beforehand for burial.
Because of this, she is remembered to this day.

The poor they would always have.
Jesus’ time with them was limited, quickly drawing to an end.

May we be faithful to the leading of the Lord - giving with abandon as He leads.
May we refuse to be indignant.
May we refuse the voice of the evil one.
