Num 31:16
“Behold, these caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam,
to trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor,
so the plague was among the congregation of the LORD.

What is the “matter of Peor”?

Num 25:1-3

While Israel remained at Shittim,
the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab.

For they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods,
and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the LORD was angry against Israel.

Israel remained at Shittim.
While there, they went against the Word of the Lord.
The Lord had told them to not take other people as mates for their sons/daughters.

Deu 7:3
“Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them;
you shall not give your daughters to their sons,
nor shall you take their daughters for your sons.

They did.

The Lord calls it “play the harlot”.

They did so with the daughters of Moab.

This is serious, as we will see.

What did it lead to?

The Moabites invited the people of the Lord to the sacrifices/meals to their gods.
The people of the Lord went.

They thereby, quickly, joined themselves to Baal of Peor.
Baal, another god who was against the Most High God.

The Lord was angry against Israel.

Such syncretism between the true way of the Lord and the gods of the world is the norm today, even within professing groups of believers.

So much of what we do is “of Baal” rather than of the Lord.

Seek the Lord.

He will reveal the truth to you.
