“Lay Aside, Run!”

Blessing folk!

By faith..

Heb 11:39-40
And all these, having gained approval through their faith,
did not receive what was promised,

because God had provided something better for us,
so that apart from us they would not be made perfect.

By faith…

  • men of old gained approval
  • did not receive what was promised

By faith…
  • God has provided something better for us
  • all of faith are made perfect…complete.

Now, remember, there is no chapter/verse division in the original writings.
Look at what the author says next.

Heb 12:1-2

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us,
let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us,
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

fixing our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfecter of faith,
who for the joy set before Him endured the cross,
despising the shame,
and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

A very familiar passage to most, yet, do we understand?
Let us take it slow.

“Therefore…” in light of all that we have seen in Hebrews 11 and all that was taught previously in the letter.

“Since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us…”
They are witnesses.
They are a great cloud…presence.
They surround us…interesting. Yes, they have gone before us, yet they still surround us.
Their example is a source of encouragement, exhortation, teaching, example.
Therefore, because of these and the truth that they lived and represent, we are to:

  • lay aside every encumbrance
  • lay aside the sin which so easily entangles us
  • run with endurance the race set before us
  • fix our eyes upon Jesus

Are we doing so?
Are we living as “a great cloud of witnesses”?
