“We Want A King,,,”

Blessings folk!

As per a request, we will spend more time looking at David. (We will return to Mark&hellipWinking

The context must be set.

Read…

1Sa 8:1-9

And it came about when Samuel was old that he appointed his sons judges over Israel.

Now the name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah;
they were judging in Beersheba.

His sons, however, did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after dishonest gain and took bribes and perverted justice.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah;

and they said to him, “Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations.”

But the thing was displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said,
“Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the LORD.

The LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them.

“Like all the deeds which they have done since the day that I brought them up from Egypt even to this day—in that they have forsaken Me and served other gods—
so they are doing to you also.

“Now then, listen to their voice; however, you shall solemnly warn them and tell them of the procedure of the king who will reign over them.”

Samuel had judged (led) Israel.
He was now old.
He appointed his sons over Israel.

Notice that Samuel did this.

These appointments displeased the elders of Israel.
Why?

Because Samuel’s sons…

  • did not walk in the ways of Samuel or of the Lord
  • turned aside after dishonest gain
  • took bribes
  • perverted justice

The people demanded that Samuel appoint a king over them.

This displeased Samuel.
He went before the Lord.
The Lord told Samuel to do it.
The people were not rejecting Samuel…gives us some insight into his heart…but the people were rejecting the Lord.
They continued to forsake the Lord.
They continued to serve other Gods.

It was not the Lord’s desire for the people to have a king from among themselves.
He was their King.

What led to this?

The sons were sinners.
The people forsook God and pursued idols.
They did not consult God.

Other portions of the Word tell us that they wanted a king because other nations had one.

God told Samuel to warn them about what they would get.
He did.
They still wanted a king.

Give close heed to these truths.
The same occurs today.

Many appointed do not walk in the ways of the Lord, turn aside to dishonest gain, take bribes and pervert justice.

The people of the Lord go their own way and do not seek the counsel of the Lord.
They do not walk in His ways.

May we not be counted among them.
