"Countenance"

“Countenance”

Blessings Folk!

Let us look a little more at Psalm 43.

Often, we do well to read the Word in various versions of translations.

We have previously read from the New American Standard...read it again...come on, only five verses. Happy Happy

Psalm 43
1 Vindicate me, O God, and plead my case against an ungodly nation;
O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!
2 For You are the God of my strength; why have You rejected me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
    3 O send out Your light and Your truth, let them lead me;
Let them bring me to Your holy hill
         And to Your dwelling places.
4 Then I will go to the altar of God,
         To God my exceeding joy;
And upon the lyre I shall praise You, O God, my God.
5 Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why are you disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.

We have seen in previous times together that the Psalmist was..

  • verse 1, asking God to vindicate him, to plead his case, deliver
  • verse 2, acknowledging that God was his strength, yet he felt rejected, was mourning
  • verse 3, asking God to send forth His light and truth to lead him...he wanted to be led to the presence and dwelling place of God
  • verse 4, determining to praise God, his exceeding joy

While thinking, meditating and speaking upon this Psalm something struck me in verse 5.

David was talking to himself.

He was declaring “why are you in despair, O my soul?”

We see this pattern in several of the Psalms.
The Psalmist cries out...wonders...doubts?

He then declares the Might and Power of God.
He then questions himself.
Then, determines that He will praise the Lord...trust in God, hope in God.

We as humans consist of spirit, soul and body.

1 Thessalonians 5:23
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The soul is the seat of the emotions.

David was declaring to his soul that he would not be ruled by the emotions of the situation. He would trust in God. He would hope in God.

David knew that the help of his countenance was God.

What is “countenance”?

Dictionary.com defines “countenance” as…

–noun
1.
appearance, esp. the look or expression of the face: a sad countenance.
2.
the face; visage.
3.
calm facial expression; composure.
4.
approval or favor; encouragement; moral support.
5.
Obsolete . bearing; behavior.

–verb (used with object)
6.
to permit or tolerate: You should not have countenanced his rudeness.
7.
to approve, support, or encourage.

The Lord is telling us that He is the one who “helps” our countenance.

The Authorized Version (KJV) of the Word gives some interesting insight…give close attention to verse 5.

Psalm 43
1 Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.
2 For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
3 O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
4 Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Has your soul ever been “disquieted”?…”uncalm”, stressed, pressured…

Here is the solution.

Hope in God.
Praise God.

Understand this. God is the “health” (I like that!) of our countenance.

If we are reflecting anything other than the countenance of the Lord, then we are walking in the flesh, we are walking in sin. We are not abiding. Sin is simply not abiding in the Lord.

I think there is something to the “health” element here.

I do know that the Lord desires to lift up our countenance.

How do I know?

One last example...hang on…

Genesis 4
6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
7 "If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it."

Cain was angry because the Lord had not accepted his offering. (It was not what the Lord called for&hellipWinking

The Lord sought to restore and warn Cain.
The Lord told Cain that if he did well...worship as prescribed...the Lord would lift up his countenance.
If he did not do well?
Sin was crouching at the door.

We are warned.

Sin is crouching at the door.
Sin desires us.
By abiding in the Lord we can master sin.
By allowing the Lord to be the health of our countenance we can live in abiding victory.

You know what Cain did. He killed his brother. But, do you know what he did between this conversation with God and the murder?

Genesis 4
8 Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

Cain told Abel what God had said.
Then he killed him.

Not allowing God to be the health of our countenance brings forth death.

Let us not do so.

Seek the Lord today.

Psalm 3
1 Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.
2 Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah.
3 But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
4 I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.

"Vindicated"

“Vindicated!”

Blessings Folk!

Give thank to the Lord for He is good.

Yesterday I asked that you pray for a situation. A friend was under attack.

My prayer was that God would “make it disappear.”

Last evening, God did.

Thank you Lord.
Thank you for praying.

These types of situations will increase.

False accusations.
Lies.
Deceit.

This particular situation was driven by politically correct hatred oriented around assumed racism.

If you have ears you already hear it.
If you have eyes you already see it.
If you have a nose you already smell it.

In the esteemed words of Patrick Henry, “I smell a rat.”

I believe it was simply the enemy seeking to destroy.

We have been warned.
Jesus told us that they did it to Him, so be not surprised when it happens to those of us who are His.

John 15:17-19
17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.
18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
KJV

So, today rejoice for the move of the Lord.

Determine in your heart in Whom you will trust.

Will you trust in the way of man? Death will come.
Will you trust in the way of the Lord? Life will be found.

Ps 35:1
Plead my cause, O Lord , with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me.
KJV

Ps 33:18-22
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;
19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waiteth for the Lord : he is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.
22 Let thy mercy, O Lord , be upon us, according as we hope in thee.
KJV

Blessings!

“Vindicate”

Blessings Folk!

Join with me today in praying for a friend, his family and their business.

They are under attack by the “powers that be” at the highest level in the land.

The accusations are false.

The attack is real.

In these situations truth matters not to the aggressor.

Still, we know the truth.

We know Truth.

Here the Word of the Lord through the Psalmist…

Psalm 43
1 Vindicate me, O God, and plead my case against an ungodly nation;
O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!

The Lord is He Who will vindicate.
The Lord will plead.
The Lord will deliver from deceitful and unjust men.

Today, Lord, deliver us from the strategies of the evil one.
Glorify yourself!

Our hope is in the Lord.

Read the balance of the Psalm…

Psalm 43
2 For You are the God of my strength; why have You rejected me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
    3 O send out Your light and Your truth, let them lead me;
Let them bring me to Your holy hill
         And to Your dwelling places.
4 Then I will go to the altar of God,
         To God my exceeding joy;
And upon the lyre I shall praise You, O God, my God.
5 Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why are you disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.

In all the situations we face today may we do so…

  • Despair not
  • Hope in God
  • Praise God
  • Acknowledge that God is the “help of my countenance”...He will lift us up
  • God is our strength
  • God will send out His light and truth to lead us
  • Rejoice in the Lord

I was telling our local gathering lately…”Fear not, fret not...it is gonna get worse.”

It is.

It will.

Evil will increase.

Darkness will wax cold.

Yet, fear not.

Fret not.

Allow not your soul to be in despair.

Hope in God.

Lord, take care of our friend’s situation!

Be certain to pray for those on the Prayer Page…

"Sowers of Discord"

June 10, 2010

“Sowers of Discord”

Blessings folk!

There are six, no wait, there are seven things the Lord despises. The Hebrew idiom of “six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto Him” drives home the point of that which the Lord truly despises.

We have reached the last point.

Review the passage…

Prov 6:16-19
16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
KJV

“He that soweth discord among brethren.”

Sadly this is pervasive within the Body of Christ.

Jesus warned us of such in Matthew 13 with the story of the wheat and the tares.

Sowing discord is done in many ways.

Perhaps a word of doubt is spoken.
Perhaps a “corrective” word is given.
Perhaps a full, open attack.
Perhaps … you get the idea.

There is no limit to the manner in which evil can be sowed.

We are told repeatedly in the Word that we are to seek the unity of the Body.

Ps 133:1
1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity!
NASU

Here what Jesus said…

John 17:23
23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.
NASU

Eph 4:1-3
4 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
NASU

We do not have to establish or create unity.
Unity is already among those who are true believers.
We are to seek unity, preserve unity, live in the unity that is in the Spirit.

Those who are not truly saved are not part of that unity.
They may be...usually are…”church members”, but that is just man’s thing.

Remember, never confuse the organization that is called the “church” with the organism which is the true Body of Christ.

There are many “church members” who by their very nature - unredeemed - will seek to bring division and discord among the true Body.

Heed how the Lord describes them…

Prov 6:12-15
12 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
14 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
KJV

Prov 16:28
28 A perverse man spreads strife, And a slanderer separates intimate friends.
NASU

John had a problem with such a person…

3 John 9-10
9 I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say.
10 For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not receive the brethren, either, and he forbids those who desire to do so and puts them out of the church.
NASU

What are we to do?

Acknowledge that there will be those who profess to be believers, yet the deeds of their lives reflect the deeds of the flesh rather than the fruit of the Spirit.

Speak the truth to them.
Love them.
Let them not tear down.
If they refuse to repent, remove the leaven.

What about those who are true believers?

3 John 11
11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.
NASU

Examine yourself.
Be certain that you are of God.
Be certain that your deeds reflect such.

Finally, let us be certain that we do not have/do

  • a proud look
  • a lying tongue
  • shed innocent blood
  • a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations
  • feet that be swift in running to mischief
  • a false witness that speaketh lies
  • sow discord among brethren

These things the Lord hates.

Tell folk.
Talk of these things.
Share, especially with our children…

Col 3:14
14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.
NASU

Blessings!!

"Liars"

June 3, 2010

“Liars”

Blessings Folk.

There are six things the Lord hates, yea seven.

KJV

A false witness that speaketh lies.

Is there another kind of false witness?

Of course, we have all told something that we thought to be the truth only to be proven wrong.

Mistakes are made.
Recollections can be cloudy.

That is not what is being addressed in this passage.

Here we see that the Lord hates those who lie.

They are everywhere.
They are especially in leadership.
In the political realm lying is considered to be the norm.

God says much about this...here is a sampling…

Ex 20:16
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
KJV

Ex 23:1
23 Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.
KJV

Matt 15:19-20
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
KJV

The Lord hates false witness.

The Hebrew word translated “false” is “seqer”. It means “a lie, vanity, without cause.”
This reveals a nuance that is important.

The Lord hates that lie that is driven by the vanity of the one doing the telling.
The lie that seeks to make one look better.
The lie that seeks to tear another down - “without cause.”

We, as true believers, must not lie.

Col 3:9-11
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
KJV

1 John 2:21-22
21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
KJV

(speaking of the great city, the holy Jerusalem)
Rev 21:27
27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
KJV

If you believe that a “little lie” does not matter, consider the Word of the Lord.
Liars will not be in the Presence of God.

Rev 22:14-15
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
KJV

If you find yourself in situations - a job, friends, a “church” - that requires you to live a life of lies, then quickly extricate yourself and trust in the Lord.

Examine yourself.

Determine to be an overcomer.

If your pattern and practice is that of a liar, then repent and show evidence of repentance, lest you serve eternity as the following…

Rev 21:7-8
7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
KJV
