“Bore A Grudge”

March 31, 2017

“Bore A Grudge”

Blessings folk!

Yes, the account is heart-breaking.
A difficult scene to watch.
A family torn by deceit and pursuit of personal desire.
Much centered around basic needs…food…game and beans.
Much centered around pursuit of power, position, status.

Nothing changes.

Let us see how this episode of Esau’s life concludes (there is more later).

Gen 27:39-41

Then Isaac his father answered and said to him,
“Behold, away from the fertility of the earth shall be your dwelling,
And away from the dew of heaven from above.

“By your sword you shall live,
And your brother you shall serve;
But it shall come about when you become restless,
That you will break his yoke from your neck.”

So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are near;
then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

Isaac basically pronounced to Esau the opposite of the blessing that he pronounced to Jacob.
Esau would be “away from the fertility of the earth”…he shall dwell there.
Esau would be “away from the dew of heaven…”
Esau would live by the sword.
Esau would serve his brother (Jacob).
Esau would be restless.
Esau would break Jacob’s yoke…he would leave.

Esau’s response?
He bore a grudge.
Understandable in the flesh.

Esau’s plan?
He determined that upon his father’s death he would kill Jacob.

Again, what a lovely family.
Yet, we are no different today.

Even within the professing Body of Christ there is division, dispute, back-biting, grudges and the like.

Such should not be.

The relationship between Esau and Jacob would be difficult.
They would ultimately be restored…many years and miles later.

May we learn from them.
Hold not a grudge.
Seek not the things of the flesh, but rather the things of the Kingdom.

“Only One Blessing”

March 30, 2017

“Only One Blessing”

Blessings folk!

Isaac blessed Jacob
The deception had worked.
Wonder what happened next?

Well, as we can suspect, things did not go well in the family.

Genesis 27:30-37
30 As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
31 He also prepared delicious food and brought it to his father. And he said to his father,
“Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that you may bless me.”
32 His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?”
He answered, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”
33 Then Isaac trembled very violently and said, “Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.” 34 As soon as Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!”
35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing.”
36 Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has cheated me these two times.
He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.”
Then he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
37 Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Behold, I have made him lord over you, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him.
What then can I do for you, my son?”
38 Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, my father?
Bless me, even me also, O my father.” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

The deception became readily apparent.

Isaac’s response?
He trembled…very violently.
Out of fear?
Out of anger?

Isaac questioned who it was that had come and received his blessing. He knew.
Isaac declare that yes, he would be blessed.
The blessing was irreversible.

Esau’s response?
He was furious.
He cried out with a exceedingly great and bitter cry.
He cried to his father to bless him.
As we will see later, Isaac did speak forth a prophetic Word over him…but, not exactly a blessing.

Esau then raved against Jacob accusing Jacob of cheating him twice.
Jacob did cheat him once.
Esau abdicated his birthright.

Birthright - abdicated, given away for a bowl of beans.
Blessing - stolen by deceit.

Isaac tells Esau what he had done…the blessing.
Jacob would lord over Esau.
Jacob’s brothers would be his servants.
Grain and wine would sustain him…in abundance.

Then, the sad poignant statement.
The cry for blessing from father.
But is was too late.
Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

This is the picture we saw in Hebrews 12…

15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God;
that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;
16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected,
for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.

Do not think that one can presumptively sin and repent at will.
Such is not so.

“God Give, Peoples Serve”

March 29, 2017

“God Give, Peoples Serve”

Blessings folk!

Isaac had received his meal.
Now, he was imparting his blessing to Esau…so he thought.
It was Jacob instead.

This is significant.
The imparting of the patriarchal blessing carried weight.
It carried power.

We in the western world do not understand the power of the spoken word.
The scripture makes it clear.

We have a choice.
We can speak blessing, or, we can speak curse.

Again, there is power in the spoken word.

Look at the blessing he spoke…

Genesis 27:28-29

Now may God give you of the dew of heaven,
And of the fatness of the earth,
And an abundance of grain and new wine;

May peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you;
Be master of your brothers,
And may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be those who curse you,
And blessed be those who bless you.”

Isaac spoke a couple of things over Jacob (thinking it was Esau).

May God…

  • give the dew of heaven
  • give the fatness of the earth
  • give abundance of grain and new wine

He was speaking the blessing of rain, abundant of crops.

Then,
May…
  • peoples serve you
  • nations bow down to you
  • you be master of your brothers
  • your mother’s sons bow down to you

Those who cursed him would be cursed.
Those who blessed him would be blessed.

This all occurred.
Abundance came forth in Jacob’s life.
His family bowed before him.

Speak forth the blessing of the Lord upon OneAnother.
Deceive not.

“I Am…Esau”

March 28, 2017

“I Am…Esau”

Blessings folk!

It was time.
The meal was ready.
The wardrobe secured and in place.

Jacob now sought to deceive his father.

Gen 27:18-29

Then he came to his father and said, “My father.”
And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”

Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me.
Get up, please, sit and eat of my game, that you may bless me.”

Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have it so quickly, my son?”
And he said, “Because the Lord your God caused it to happen to me.”

Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come close, that I may feel you, my son,
whether you are really my son Esau or not.”

So Jacob came close to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said,
“The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”

He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands;
so he blessed him.

And he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.”

So he said, “Bring it to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that I may bless you.”
And he brought it to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine and he drank.

Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come close and kiss me, my son.”

So he came close and kissed him;
and when he smelled the smell of his garments,
he blessed him and said,
“See, the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed;

Now may God give you of the dew of heaven,
And of the fatness of the earth,
And an abundance of grain and new wine;

May peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you;
Be master of your brothers,
And may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be those who curse you,
And blessed be those who bless you.”

Jacob lied to his father repeated…

  • I am Esau, your first born…though now, Jacob did have the first born inheritance since Esau has abdicated it for a bowl of red beans.
  • Eat of my game…it was not game, it was of the flock
  • “How…so quickly?”. “The Lord your God caused it…”
  • “Are you really my son?”…I am
  • smell of the garments

Deception comes in many varied ways.

Isaac’s eyesight may be gone, but his sense of hearing was good…he knew the voice was wrong.
His reasoning was good…how so quickly?
Apparently his taste buds were failing…no discernment between game and flock.

The extensive con game was successful.

The Blessings came.
We will look at it tomorrow.

For today, do not walk in any form of deception.
Any.
Ask the Lord.
He will reveal.

“Your Curse Be On Me…”

March 27, 2017

“Your Curse Be On Me…”

Blessings folk!

We continue the account of Isaac and his “dysfunctional” family.

That is what the world would call them - “dysfunctional”.

Actually, it is the norm.

All families have situations.
All families have circumstances.
All families have sin.

Rebekah had just revealed the plan to Jacob.
He was to hurry, fetch an animal from among the flock.
She would fix a savory meal for Isaac.
Jacob would serve the meal, feigning to be Esau.
Jacob would receive the Blessing.

Gen 27:10-17
“Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat,
so that he may bless you before his death.”

Jacob answered his mother Rebekah,
“Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man and I am a smooth man.

“Perhaps my father will feel me, then I will be as a deceiver in his sight,
and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing.”

But his mother said to him,
“Your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.”

So he went and got them, and brought them to his mother;
and his mother made savory food such as his father loved.

Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her elder son,
which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.

And she put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.

She also gave the savory food and the bread, which she had made, to her son Jacob.

This was a well-planned execution of deception.
One portion of the family undermining the other.
One portion playing upon the weakness - spiritual and physical - of the other.

A husband and wife that obviously had “issues”.

Mom was willing to let the curse fall on her.

Obviously, Jacob was Rebekah’s favorite.
Esau was Isaac’s.

She planned and plotted.

They staged the encounter.
Clothes of Esau.
Skins of young goats to emulate Esau…tells us something about him…rough, hairy, red.

Now, time for the meal, the Blessing, the deception.

So much of what the professing Body of Christ does follows this pattern.

Such should not be.

“Fix…and I Will Bless”

March 26, 2017

“Fix…and I Will Bless”

Blessings folk!

Esau had abdicated his birthright for a bowl of beans - lentils to be exact.

But there was one more thing that was to occur.

The blessing of the father.

We saw yesterday that Esau sought repentance, but it was not to be had.

Let us begin to look at the Esau account…

Gen 27:1-10
Now it came about, when Isaac was old and his eyes were too dim to see, that he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” And he said to him, “Here I am.”

Isaac said, “Behold now, I am old and I do not know the day of my death.

“Now then, please take your gear, your quiver and your bow,
and go out to the field and hunt game for me;

and prepare a savory dish for me such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat,
so that my soul may bless you before I die.”

Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau.
So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring home,

Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Behold, I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, saying,

‘Bring me some game and prepare a savory dish for me, that I may eat,
and bless you in the presence of the LORD before my death.’

“Now therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you.

“Go now to the flock and bring me two choice young goats from there,
that I may prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves.

“Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat,
so that he may bless you before his death.”

What a lovely family.

Apparently Isaac did not know about the “lentil soup” episode.
But God did.
God knew that Esau had forfeited His inheritance.

Look at the fleshly desires we see in this short vignette.

Isaac wants a good meal of game before he dies.
He wants the meal, then he will bless Esau, apparently with the blessing of the first born.
He loved food.

Esau is more than happy to oblige.
He wants the blessing, even though he had long before denied it.

Rebekah, the loving wife?, plotted against her husband.

Isaac favored Esau…Esau was “a man’s man” as we will see.

Rebekah favored Jacob…he was as the meaning of his name “deceiver, supplanter”.

Denial of the birthright of God.
Lies.
Deception.
Intrique.
Food used to gain favor.
Food used to meet desires.
Blessing received at the point of manipulation.

Humm….sound familiar…

"No Place For Repentance"

March 25, 2017

“No Place For Repentance”

Blessings Folk!

The Lord calls us to live by faith. In Hebrews 11 He provides examples of what the life of faith looks like.

In Hebrew 12 He gives instruction as to how to live by faith.
  • lay aside encumbrance and sin
  • run with endurance
  • fix our eyes on Jesus
  • consider what Jesus did for us
  • receive the discipline of the Lord
  • strengthen OneAnother
  • pursue peace
  • see to it that no one comes short of the grace of God…He uses Esau as an example.

The Lord is about to explain why we are to live this way by faith.

But first, there is more on Esau.

We have seen this…

Heb 12:14-16
Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God;
that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;

that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau,
who sold his own birthright for a single meal.

We saw the Esau account earlier.
Now this…

Heb 12:17
For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected,
for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.

Esau realized his mistake.
He wanted his position back.
He wanted the inheritance of the firstborn.
He wanted the blessing.

It was too late.
He rejected his birthright.
The Lord rejected him.
“But,” you say, “he sought repentance”.

Yes.
He sought repentance with tears.
Yet it was not to be had.

Why?

Because the Lord knew his heart.
He was sorrowful.
He was angry.
He was remorseful.
But, apparently, he was not truly repentant of heart.

The Lord knows the heart.
The Lord knows our true motivation and intention.

We will look more at the heart of Esau tomorrow.
For today, what is the state of your heart?

“Immoral and Godless”

March 24, 2017

“Immoral and Godless”

Blessings Folk!

So, what is meant by the verse about Esau?

Heb 12:14-16

Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God;
that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;

that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau,
who sold his own birthright for a single meal.

The Esau reference is used as an example.
As an example to not let the root of bitterness spring up and cause trouble.
A warning about being being defiled by bitterness.

Esau is described as immoral and godless.

Why?

Because he sold his own birthright for a single meal.
He rejected that which the Lord had provided.
He sought the immediate satisfaction of “now” over the future the Lord had for him

We do well to remember this Word of warning.
We do well to reflect upon the account…

Gen 25:27

When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field,
but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents.

Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished;

and Esau said to Jacob,
“Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished.”
Therefore his name was called Edom.

But Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.”

Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?”

And Jacob said, “First swear to me”; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.

Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew;
and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way.
Thus Esau despised his birthright.

We have all been that hungry…”the shakes”.
We have all been tempted by the desires of the flesh.
Esau (also called Edom…”Red”…due to this event) was more interested in addressing “the shakes” than he was in his divinely granted birth position.
Jacob (whose name mean “supplanter”, “deceiver&rdquoWinking saw an opportunity and ceased it.

Surely Esau was not serious?
Surely Jacob was jesting?

Jacob knew the significance.
Esau likely did…and did not care “what use then is the birthright to me…I am about to die”.

God called Esau immoral, godless because of this decision.

…to be continued…

For today, deny not the things granted by the Lord.
Submit to the Spirit.
Walk in the Spirit.
Do not succumb to the desires, passions, cravings and needs of the flesh.

“Bitterness Springing Up”

Blessings folk!

Let us look a little more at the passage from yesterday…

Heb 12:14-16

Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God;
that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;

that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau,
who sold his own birthright for a single meal.

“Come short of the grace of God”?

The idea seems to be that we have role a and responsibility with OneAnother.

We need to make certain that we function in the grace of God, thereby, not quenching the Spirit and causing others to stumble.

We are to pursue peace with all men.
We are to walk in holiness.
We are not to neglect the grace of the Lord - in our lives or others.

The “see to it” begins with each person individually.
Do not be distracted by the speck in a brother’s eye while you have a log in your eye!

We must see to it that no root of bitterness springs up.
Again, beginning with ourselves.
This is a sad state that I see in many, especially those of age.
It is truly sad to see people at the end of life so bitter and embittered.

It all comes down to forgiveness.
Unforgiveness will fester until the root of bitterness springs up, causing trouble.
This bring defilement.
Many within the professing body of Christ are defiled.
They are bitter.
They are unforgiving.
They cause trouble.

There are more than a few.

The enemy uses such against the Kingdom.

Examine yourself.
Repent.
Be certain that you are not of the Embittered.

March 22, 2017

“Pursue…”

Blessings folk!

The Lord continues to give us instruction.

We are to live by faith.

This faith will manifest in every element of our lives.

Hear the command…

Heb 12:14-16

Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God;
that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;

that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau,
who sold his own birthright for a single meal.

We are to pursue peace with all men.
That does not mean that peace with all men will be attained.

Rom 12:18

If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.

As far as it depends on you.
We are to pursue peace.
We can not make someone react in peace, etc.

We are to pursue sanctification.
Without sanctification no one will see the Lord.
This simply means that one must first be saved, justified, before they can pursue holiness/sanctification.
Too many try to live holy, godly lives and are frustrated.
They are not saved.
Therefore, they will not be holy, godly.

One more.
We are to see to it that no one comes short of the grace of God…
That is interesting.
We have a role and responsibility with OneAnother within the Body to encourage, exhort, teach, model, correct, etc.
We must not come short of the grace of God.
Why?
Because no root of bitterness should be allowed…
…to be continued…

For today, pursue peace, sanctification and the fullness of the grace of God.
Reject bitterness.

“Strengthened and Straight”

Blessings folk!

Discipline is not exciting.
At the moment it is not joyful.
But, it brings good fruit, the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Heb 12:11
All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful;
yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Now, watch…

Heb 12:12-13
Therefore, strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble,

and make straight paths for your feet,
so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.

Therefore…in light of all we have seen…
The cloud of witnesses.
Laying aside of sin and encumbrance.
Running the race.
Fixing our eyes on Jesus.
Considering Jesus.
The Lord’s discipline.

Therefore…
Strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble.
Make straight paths for your feet.
Be healed.

At first glance it appears that we are to do so for one another.
This is true.
But, the strongest interpretation seems to be to start with oneself.

The idea is this.
Strengthen your weak hands via the discipline of the Lord.
Strengthen your feeble needs via the discipline of the Lord.
Make straight your path via the discipline of the Lord.
Be healed via the discipline of the Lord.
Strength and straight paths are found in the discipline of the Lord.

“Peaceful Fruit of Righteousness”

Blessings folk!

We saw yesterday the purpose of discipline from the Lord…

Heb 12:8-11

But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers,
then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them;
shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?

For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them,
but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.

All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful;
yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

He disciplines us for our good so that we may share His holiness.

The Lord acknowledges what we know, all discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful.

All discipline.
For the moment.
“Seems”…that is interesting. It appears to be, and yet, there is something more than meets the eye…something more than what we are experiencing in the natural.

When we have been trained by the discipline of the Lord, there is fruit.
What?
The peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Discipline yields righteousness.
Righteousness brings peace.

Notice the timing.
Afterwards.
After the discipline.
After that which is not joyful.
After that which is sorrowful.
After the training.
Then the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Do not reject the discipline of the Lord.
View it as the Lord does.

“Discipline! Why?”

March 19, 2017

“Discipline! Why?”

Blessings folk!

Flowing out of the truths related to the “great cloud of witnesses” who lived by faith, the Lord is speaking of discipline.

We saw some yesterday, now more.

Heb 12:8-11

But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers,
then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them;
shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?

For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them,
but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.

All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful;
yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

A couple of things for today.

First, if you are without the discipline of the Lord, then it is because you are not His son.
You are illegitimate.
You may be religious.
You may be good in the eyes of the world.
You may do good works.
Yet, you are not in relationship with the Lord.
If you are His, He will discipline.

The Lord gives the example of our earthly fathers.
They discipline.
We respect it.
How much more so the discipline of the Father of spirits?
It is in Him that we live.

Second, there is purpose.
The Lord disciplines for purpose.
He disciplines us for our good.

Why?
Another purpose…think of this.
That we may share His holiness.

Again…
The Lord disciplines us that we may share His holiness.

That is something.
That is amazing.
That is something worthy of praising Him.

“The Exhortation”

Blessings folk!

Consider Jesus.
Remember what He has done for us.
Reflect upon what He is doing.

Why?

To keep us from growing weary and losing heart.

But, there is more.

Jesus took on the sin of the world…unto death.

Have we dealt in like manner with our sin?

Hebrews 12:3-7

For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself,
so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;

and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,
“MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD,
NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM;

FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES,
AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES.”

It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons;
for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

I suspect that most of us have not resisted against sin to the point of shedding blood.
We have not strived to that degree against sin.

We also have likely forgotten the exhortation that is given to us as sons of God.

  • do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord
  • do not faint when reproved by Him

Remember,
  • the Lord disciplines those He loves
  • He scourge every son He receives

God deals with us as sons.
He disciplines us so that we will endure.

Rejoice in this truth, though we may not always like it!

The Lord loves you.
The Lord delights in you.
The Lord will discipline.

Pro 3:11-12

My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD or loathe His reproof,

For whom the LORD loves He reproves,
Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.

“Weary and Lose Heart”

March 17, 2017

“Weary and Lose Heart”

Blessings folk!

Again, we…
  • are to lay aside every encumbrance
  • are to lay aside the sin which so easily entangles us
  • are to run with endurance the race set before us
  • are to fix our eyes on Jesus

Jesus…
  • is the author of our faith
  • is the perfecter (completer) of our faith
  • endured the cross
  • despised the shame
  • sat down at the right hand of the throne of God

Heb 12:1-2

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us,
let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us,
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

fixing our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfecter of faith,
who for the joy set before Him endured the cross,
despising the shame,
and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Now, why are we to fix our eyes on Jesus?
Fix when?
Related to what?
Purpose?

The next verse tells us…

Heb 12:3

For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself,
so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

We are to consider what Jesus endured.
We are to consider what sinners did to Him.
Why?
So that we might grow weary and lose heart.

Are you weary?
Are you tired?
Have you lost heart?

Consider what the Lord did for us.
Our situation pales in comparison.

Be as Jesus was…for the joy set before Him He endured the cross.
For the joy set before us, may we preserve and press on.

“At the Right Hand of the Throne of God”

Blessings folk!

So, we…
  • are to lay aside every encumbrance
  • are to lay aside the sin which so easily entangles us
  • are to run with endurance the race set before us
  • are to set our eyes on Jesus

Consider and remember what the Lord did for us.

He is the author of our faith.
He is the perfecter (the One who completed) our faith

It is only in and through Jesus that faith is possible.
He is the source and provider of faith.

He endured the cross.
He despised the shame of the cross.
Why?
For the joy set before Him.
The joy of doing the will of Father.
The joy of defeating sin and death.

Jesus has now sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
What is He doing now?

Rom 8:33

Who will bring a charge against God’s elect?
God is the one who justifies;

who is the one who condemns?
Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised,
who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

Jesus is at the right of God interceding for us.

Interceding between who.

Between God and…

Rev 12:10

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night.

Jesus intercedes between God and the accuser of our brethren (satan).
Satan accuses us before God day and night.
Jesus intercedes without ceasing.

Let us fix our eyes upon the Lord Who has done and continues to do all this.

"Lay Aside, Run, Fixed Eye!"

March 15, 2017

“Lay Aside, Run, Fixed Eye!”

Blessings folk!

So, let us continue to look at the conclusion of the gallery of faith in Hebrews 11.
Why did God remind us of these folk?
Why did He give the detail and interpretation?

Note the first Word of the following: “therefore”…in conclusion…in light of…

Hebrews 11 was given to us to instruct, encourage, exhort.

We are to lay aside…

  • lay aside every encumbrance
  • lay aside every sin
  • lay aside all that entangles us.

Take it before the Lord.
What are the things in your live which entangle?
What are the encumbrances?
Wants?
Desires? Sin?
Etc. etc.?

Lay them aside.
The Lord empowers true believers to be able to do so.

We are to run…
  • run the race set before us…set by the Lord…forget not.
  • run in the endurance of the Lord

Run the race in joy.
Set aside the things that entangle.

How do we do this?

We are to fix our eyes on Jesus.

Upon what are your eyes focused?
Upon what are your passions and desires pursuing?
Anything other than the Lord Jesus is idolatry, pure and simple.

Let us fix our eyes upon Jesus.
Let us run the race set before us.
Let us lay aside all that entangles.

Oh yeah…all by faith!

“Lay Aside, Run!”

March 14, 2017

“Lay Aside, Run!”

Blessing folk!

By faith..

Heb 11:39-40
And all these, having gained approval through their faith,
did not receive what was promised,

because God had provided something better for us,
so that apart from us they would not be made perfect.

By faith…

  • men of old gained approval
  • did not receive what was promised

By faith…
  • God has provided something better for us
  • all of faith are made perfect…complete.

Now, remember, there is no chapter/verse division in the original writings.
Look at what the author says next.

A very familiar passage to most, yet, do we understand?
Let us take it slow.

“Therefore…” in light of all that we have seen in Hebrews 11 and all that was taught previously in the letter.

“Since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us…”
They are witnesses.
They are a great cloud…presence.
They surround us…interesting. Yes, they have gone before us, yet they still surround us.
Their example is a source of encouragement, exhortation, teaching, example.
Therefore, because of these and the truth that they lived and represent, we are to:

  • lay aside every encumbrance
  • lay aside the sin which so easily entangles us
  • run with endurance the race set before us
  • fix our eyes upon Jesus

Are we doing so?
Are we living as “a great cloud of witnesses”?

“Faith: Received Not…”

March 13, 2017

“Faith: Received Not…”

Blessings folk!!

Now, let us look at the closing verses of the great “gallery of faith” in Hebrews 11.

We have seen much about those of faith.
How they lived.
What happened to them.

The bottom line is this - the life of faith modeled/taught in the Word is starkly different from that proclaimed/projected in “the contemporary church”.

As Jesus said…

Luk 18:8
I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly.
However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth
?”

Will there be true faith found when the Lord returns?
Yes.
Will it be common?
No.

Why?
Because “the church” today has a wrong concept of faith.
We think we should get instant feedback and benefit from faith.

From one perspective we do - we are declared righteous, we are saved.

But most folks faith declines if they “do not get what they want now!”

What of those in Hebrews 11?

Heb 11:39-40
And all these, having gained approval through their faith,
did not receive what was promised,

because God had provided something better for us,
so that apart from us they would not be made perfect.

They gained approval by faith.
Yet they did not receive what was promised.
It was to come…in the future…after their corporeal existence.

Why?
Because God provided something better for us.

They, the faithful of Hebrews 11, would not be “perfect” - complete - without us!

We rarely have that view.

What if we are to live in faith…receive not the promise in this life…but know that it is for generations many hundreds of years down the road?

It changes our perspective.

Live by faith.
Live in faith.

“Worthy: World or Lord?”

March 12, 2017

“Worthy: World or Lord?”

Blessings folk!

Let us think a little more on the phrase we saw yesterday…”men of whom the world was not worthy”…

Heb 11:37-38

They were stoned,
they were sawn in two,
they were tempted,
they were put to death with the sword;
they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

(men of whom the world was not worthy),
wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground.

Again, this does not paint a picture of modern-day faith.

Most of what we do “in faith” carries a strong stench of the world.

We try to…

  • look “pretty”
  • be “attractive”
  • “entice”
  • “fit in”
  • etc. etc.

Where is this?…

Act 17:6

And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

The people were crying out before the rulers of the city in despair because “these that have turned the world upside down are come hither also” speaking of Believers.

Rare is the man that “turns the world upside down”…that turns his world upside down.

More often than not “men of faith” are welcomed and embraced with open arms by the world.

Hummm…

Hebrews 11 is a amazing passage.
A long list of those of faith, then this little parenthetical line…”(men of whom the world was not worthy)”.

The distinction is clear.
Are we men that the world finds worthy?
Or…
Are we men that the Lord finds worthy?

The fruit will reveal.

“Men of Whom the World Was Not Worthy”

March 11, 2017

“Men of Whom the World Was Not Worthy”

Blessings folk!

The Lord has given example after example in Hebrews 11 of those who lived by faith.

Each example has a story, a truth, an encouragement, an exhortation.

We do well to reflect upon this passage often.

The Lord is now firing of examples quickly…

Heb 11:37-38

They were stoned,
they were sawn in two,
they were tempted,
they were put to death with the sword;
they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

(men of whom the world was not worthy),
wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground.

One question/thought for today.

Would such be considered “men of faith” today?

I would say “no”.

“Men of faith” today are far more concerned with being attractive to the world rather than being “men of whom the world was not worthy”.

Faith requires more than…

  • nice clothing
  • nice buildings
  • nice houses
  • everyone liking us
  • being spoken well of
  • etc. etc.

Most contemporary “men of faith” pursue such.

Rather, by faith, we might be…
  • stoned
  • sawn in two (likely Isaiah)
  • tempted
  • put to death by the sword (Islam is doing this to many true believers now)
  • destitute
  • afflicted
  • ill-treated
  • wandering upon the land in deserts, mountains, caves, hole.

Not the picture we think of.

I suspect our think’n is wrong.

Put aside the “stink’n think’n”.

Put on the armor of faith.
Get ready.

“By Faith: A Better Resurrection”

Blessings folk!

The writer of Hebrews was presenting a great gallery of faith in Hebrews 11.
He began by speaking of individuals.
He is rapidly concluding by mentioning what they had encountered, endured, done.

Read closely.
Read carefully.
We so often think that we are “suffering”.

Heb 11:32-36

And what more shall I say?
For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets,

who by faith
conquered kingdoms,
performed acts of righteousness,
obtained promises,
shut the mouths of lions,

quenched the power of fire,
escaped the edge of the sword,
from weakness were made strong,
became mighty in war,
put foreign armies to flight.

Women received back their dead by resurrection;
and others were tortured, not accepting their release,
so that they might obtain a better resurrection;

and others experienced mockings and scourgings,
yes,
also chains and imprisonment.

By faith they endured.
By faith they were victorious.
By faith they will obtain a better resurrection…better than simply being raised to corporeal life again.

So will we, if we are of faith.
Live by faith.

“What More…?”

Blessings folk!

The author of Hebrews was driving home the point that it is by faith that we as believers live.
Example after example has been given.

He continues…but begins to accelerate the conversation…

Heb 11:32-34

And what more shall I say?
For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah,
of David and Samuel and the prophets,

who by faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness,
obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions,

quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword,
from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.

“What more shall I say?”
How many more examples need to be given?

He would run out of time if he went into detail about each that was listed.
So would we!

The Word provides detail of each…
Gideon - Judges 6-8
Barak - Judges 4-5
Samson - Judges 13-16
Jephthah - Judges 11-12
David - 1 Samuel 16-2 Samuel; Psalms, etc.
Prophets - “major/minor” prophets

Look again at what was recounted.

By faith they:

  • conquered kingdoms
  • performed acts of righteousness
  • obtained promises
  • shut the mouths of lions (Daniel)
  • quenched the power of fire (Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah)
  • escaped the edge of the sword (several)
  • from weakness were made strong
  • became might in war
  • put foreign armies to flight

All by faith.
Simply by faith.

Faith=Believing God.

Why would we choose to live any other way?

“A Canaanite Prostitute”

Blessings folk!

By faith, Rahab believed.

Rahab, a person of ill-reputation and deed.

Yet, she knew that “the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath”.

She was not perfect.
Nor were any of us.
Yet, she believed by faith and was spared.

She was instructed to place a crimson cord in her window, thereby denoting the place to be protected.
A vivid picture of the crimson stream we see throughout the Word…a picture of the blood of Messiah.

Let’s complete the account from yesterday…

Jos 2:22-24

They departed and came to the hill country, and remained there for three days until the pursuers returned. Now the pursuers had sought them all along the road, but had not found them.

Then the two men returned and came down from the hill country and crossed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they related to him all that had happened to them.

They said to Joshua, “Surely the LORD has given all the land into our hands;
moreover, all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before us.”

Jos 6:22-25

Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the harlot’s house and bring the woman and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her.”

So the young men who were spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all she had they also brought out all her relatives and placed them outside the camp of Israel.

They burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only the silver and gold, and articles of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.

However, Rahab the harlot and her father’s household and all she had, Joshua spared;
and she has lived in the midst of Israel to this day,
for she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

By faith, Rahab spared her family through the Lord.
By faith, Rahab lived in the midst of Israel…to this day.
By faith, Rahab became something she would never have imagined…

Mat 1:5-6a

Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab,
Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse.

Jesse was the father of David the king…

Salmon was one of the two spies.
She married him!
Rahab was the great, great grandmother of King David.
She is in the genealogy of Messiah - Jesus.

A vivid picture of the grace and mercy of the Lord.

“By Faith: The Scarlet Cord Was Tied”

Blessings folk!

By faith the walls of Jericho were removed.

Hebrews 11:30
By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.

Hebrews reveals two points of faith in the Jericho account.

Faith from the children of Israel…those without the wall…on the outside.

Faith from Rahab…from within the wall…on the inside.

Hebrews 11:31
By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient,
after she had welcomed the spies in peace.

Here is the back story…longer than normal. Do take time to read, consider, meditate, especially to what we see about Rahab.

Joshua 2:1-21
Then Joshua the son of Nun sent two men as spies secretly from Shittim, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lodged there.

It was told the king of Jericho, saying,
“Behold, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.”

And the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.”

But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them, and she said,
Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.

“It came about when it was time to shut the gate at dark, that the men went out;
I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.”

But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them in the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof.

So the men pursued them on the road to the Jordan to the fords;
and as soon as those who were pursuing them had gone out, they shut the gate.

Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof,

and said to the men, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you.

“For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

“When we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you; for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

“Now therefore, please swear to me by the LORD, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s household, and give me a pledge of truth,

and spare my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters, with all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”

So the men said to her, “Our life for yours if you do not tell this business of ours; and it shall come about when the LORD gives us the land that we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”

Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall,
so that she was living on the wall.

She said to them, “Go to the hill country, so that the pursuers will not happen upon you, and hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return.
Then afterward you may go on your way.”

The men said to her, “We shall be free from this oath to you which you have made us swear,
unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and gather to yourself into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father’s household.

“It shall come about that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be free; but anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him.

“But if you tell this business of ours,
then we shall be free from the oath which you have made us swear.”

She said, “According to your words, so be it.” So she sent them away, and they departed;
and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

By faith, Rahab believed the accounts of God that they had heard…
- brought the people of Israel out of Egypt
- dried up the Red Sea
- defeated the Amorite kings

By faith, Rahab believed…
- “I know” that the Lord had given the children of Israel the land
- that the Lord had brought terror upon the land where she lived
- that the Lord had melted their hearts
- that the Lord had removed all courage from them
- that the Lord, He is God of heaven above and earth below.

By faith, Rahab believed the Lord.
By faith, Rahab chose to side with God.
By faith, Rahab worked against the enemy of the Lord, her people, her leadership.
By faith, Rahab stood firm in the Lord.

May we do likewise…

“By Faith: March, Shout, Covet Not”

Blessings folk!

The Lord spoke.
Joshua and the children of Israel obeyed.
They marched around Jericho one time, every day for six days.
Then…

Joshua 6:15-21
Then on the seventh day they rose early at the dawning of the day and marched around the city in the same manner seven times; only on that day they marched around the city seven times.

At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people,
“Shout! For the LORD has given you the city.

“The city shall be under the ban, it and all that is in it belongs to the LORD; only Rahab the harlot and all who are with her in the house shall live,
because she hid the messengers whom we sent.

“But as for you, only keep yourselves from the things under the ban, so that you do not covet them and take some of the things under the ban, and make the camp of Israel accursed and bring trouble on it.

“But all the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron are holy to the LORD;
they shall go into the treasury of the LORD.”

So the people shouted, and priests blew the trumpets; and when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight ahead, and they took the city.

They utterly destroyed everything in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

By faith, they obeyed and marched around the city seven times.
By faith, they were silent.
By faith, they shouted and took the city.
By faith, they kept themselves from the things “under the ban” (a subject for another time&hellipWinking.
By faith, they were not to covet…a Word for us.
By faith, they utterly destroyed everything in the city…as the Lord commanded.

“Obedience: Day by Day”

Blessings folk!

Joshua had received the Word of the Lord.

Joshua 6:6-14

So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD.”

Then he said to the people, “Go forward, and march around the city,
and let the armed men go on before the ark of the LORD.”

And it was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the LORD went forward and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.

The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets,
and the rear guard came after the ark, while they continued to blow the trumpets.

But Joshua commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout nor let your voice be heard nor let a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you, ‘Shout!’ Then you shall shout!”

So he had the ark of the LORD taken around the city, circling it once;
then they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp.

Now Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD.

The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew the trumpets; and the armed men went before them and the rear guard came after the ark of the LORD, while they continued to blow the trumpets.

Thus the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp;
they did so for six days.

Joshua and the people of the Lord did as the Lord instructed.
They marched.
By faith.
They marched around the city as commanded by the Lord with the Presence of the Lord before them.

Trumpets of praise and proclamation before the Lord were played.
As the Lord instructed.

The people were silent.
As the Lord instructed.

They circled the city, then spent the night in camp.
They did so for six days.

What is the purpose?
We know that “obedience” is.
Doing what the Lord commands.
Doing it in His timing.
Listening to Him.

They knew the plan in advance.
They obeyed.
Day by day.
By faith in the Word of the Lord.

How much more should we on this side of Calvary?

Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel.
None went out, and none came in.

And the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand,
with its king and mighty men of valor.

You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once.
Thus shall you do for six days.

Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark.
On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times,
and the priests shall blow the trumpets.

And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat,
and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.”

There are many details here.
Many of prophetic significance…I believe.

But here are the big things for us.

The Lord gave His Word.
They obeyed His Word.
It is that simple

Listen.
Obey.

We may not understand…really?…march around six days.
We may feel foolish…suspect that some among them did.

But, when the Lord instructs, do.
When He says “shout”, shout!

And watch the walls come down.
Then, go up.
Straight way.
Each of the people.

"The Wall..."

March 3, 2017

“The Wall…”

Blessings folk!

What do you do when you “hit a wall”?
At work?
In relationships?
In goals, dreams, visions?
In life?

Do you seek a way around?
Do you seek a way over?
Do you seek to tear down the wall?
Do you seek to tunnel under?
Do you quit?

Here is what you do with a wall…

Hebrews 11:30

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.

A wall is to be dealt with “by faith”.

The strength of man will never adequately deal with “a wall”.

Only faith.

We likely know the account, but let’s look at it…

Joshua 6:1-2

Now Jericho was tightly shut because of the sons of Israel;
no one went out and no one came in.

The LORD said to Joshua,
“See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the valiant warriors.

Jericho was shut tight due to the multitude of the sons of Israel.
No one came or went from Jericho.
It was unconquerable in the eyes of man.

Yet, hear what the Lord said.
“I have given Jericho into your hand…”
From the perspective of the Lord it was a done event.
The Lord would give.
The city.
The king.
The valiant warriors.
All given to the sons of Israel.

The Lord gives the plan.
The Lord gives the faith.

Fear not the wall.
Fear the Most High.
Face the wall in faith and see what the Lord does.

“Deliverance By Faith”

March 2, 2017

“Deliverance By Faith”

Blessings folk!

Moses lived by faith.
Of course, this does not mean that he did everything perfectly.

Exodus 6:12, 30

But Moses spoke before the LORD, saying, “Behold, the sons of Israel have not listened to me; how then will Pharaoh listen to me, for I am unskilled in speech?”

But Moses said before the LORD,
“Behold, I am unskilled in speech; how then will Pharaoh listen to me?”

Moses pulled the ole “but Lord” line.
If He is truly Lord, then we do not say “but”…”no”… etc.

The desire to “be perfect” will quench the life of faith.
Live by faith.
Allow the Lord to take care of the “perfect” part.
He will lead us into holiness and righteousness.

Now, the Lord continues to remind us in Hebrews 11 of the faith of Moses.

Hebrews 11:28-29

By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood,
so that he who destroyed the firstborn would not touch them.

By faith they passed through the Red Sea as though they were passing through dry land; and the Egyptians, when they attempted it, were drowned.

By faith, Moses kept the Passover as instructed by the Lord…see Exodus 12.
By faith, Moses sprinkled the blood as instructed by the Lord…see Exodus 12.
Why?
So that they would be touched by he who destroyed the firstborn.

Exodus 12:29

Now it came about at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of cattle.

By faith, Moses and the children of Israel passed through the Red sea…as upon dry land… see Exodus 14.
Egyptians were drowned.

By faith, deliverance.
By faith, defeat of the enemy.
By faith, protection from death.

By faith, the only way to live.

“By Faith He Left…”

March 1, 2017

“By Faith He Left…”

Blessings folk!

Have you refused the way of the world?
Have you chosen to endure for the cause of Christ?
Have you considered the reproach of Christ to be greater than the riches of the world?

Moses did.
So should we.

There is more from Moses.

Hebrews 11:27

By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king;
for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen.

Moses departed Egypt by faith, not by fear.

He led the people to freedom in the Lord.
A Deliverer. A typological picture of Jesus.
He led the people away from the slavery of the world.
He did so by faith.

Moses feared not the wrath of the king.
Why?
How?
He did so by “seeing Him who is unseen”.
Because he endured in Him.
He pressed on.
By faith in the Most High Who called him.
By faith in the Most High Who spoke to him.

So should we.
The Lord is calling us to leave all that encumbers us, all that trips us, all that draws us from Him.

Fear not the world
Keep your eyes upon Him Who is unseen.
Endure…until the end.
